This evening I’ve set the studio up for a sensuous experience tomorrow. She wants fine art nude photos but wants to start of with some glamour in lingerie until her confidence builds.
The sensuous experience only allows enough time for one studio set, so I suggested we went for a black background. A black background is fantastic for fine art nudes as all distractions from the body’s form are extracted. However it’s a bit more tricky to set up the lighting for glamour as rim lighting is required to separate the subject from the background.
Rim lighting has proved a bit of a nightmare in the past with controlling the light just how I want it. However with the additional studio flash light and the right reflectors things will work much better now.
Another problem with rim lighting is stray light getting into the camera lens and ruining your pictures. My original plan was to buy light modifiers called barn doors. These are literally as the name suggests – doors that fit in front of the light that can be moved to block or allow light though as desired.
After finding out they’d cost around £360 each I very quickly went off the idea. I’ve not adopted an idea I learnt from Nigel Holmes of Girl Files. He’s simply uses small sheets of a material clamped to a light stand to block the light. I’ve done this before using card board but it’s very Heath Robinson. So a couple of weeks ago I bought a sheet of black plastic and made my own, which you can see in the studio shot below. And the final result is my tripod as pictured at the top of this post
Unfortunately I won’t be able to show you the results from tomorrow’s session. But I’m sure there will be future sessions in the near future that I will be able to post a few images.
