If you saw it you missed it

Footballer kicks the ball mid air

I heard a prominent Motorsport photographer once say that if you see it you’ve missed it. He was talking about that critical moment.

In sports the critical moment may have a window of less than 1/100th of second. And if you see it through the lens of your camera – you’ve missed it. You see a SLR, Single Lens Reflex, camera a mirror raises in order to capture the image. Whilst the mirror is raised you can’t see anything through the lens.

I thought I’d missed this footballer of Adhara FC as he brought the football back into play off the opponents goal line. The shutter was pressed a moment before the anticipated critical moment. All I saw was darkness followed by him disappearing under my camera’s view. As you can imagine, I was delighted to have captured this, which is definitely the best shot of the day :-)

Why was I photographing a football match?

Adhara FC is managed by one of my clients. This started with their wedding. I remember it well as there was a running commentary being relayed to Ben, the groom, on the progress of a major football match. PatB Wedding Photography now sponsors the football club and today I was at the match to photograph the team of 2010.  Last year I had the privilege to photograph their first newborn baby but I don’t think Inner Beauty Photography will sponsor them too :-)
