Computer Generated Imagery, CGI, has been around for a long while in film making and has been steadily improving. CGI has improved to such an extent that it is often hard to distinguish between fantasy and reality. Great actors are able to interact perfectly in studio environments that once the environment has been generated their fantasy world becomes a believable reality.
Bjorn Thomasen discussed this in his photographers master class at the SWPP conference last January. Afterwards I had a few attempts at separating my subject from their background and add a new fantasy background. But they weren’t very convincing as my subjects ended up looking like cardboard cut outs. Similar to quality of film CGI 10 or 15 years ago.
After learning another method for substituting another background behind the subject in a recent issue of Image Maker magazine, I decided to have another go at creating a new reality.
The key is to photograph your subject against a white background. Then using special techniques in Photoshop allow the new fantasy background to show through the white background. Only minimal manual intervention is required to tidy the results.
Creating my new reality
To test the procedure I used an image of Karen from a recent glamour photo session and a photo of the pyramids in Cairo Egypt. The lighting on Karen doesn’t perfectly match that in the scene behind but it’s not far off. This may not be your fantasy location but I’m you’ll agree it looks believable.
If I could make your fantasy become a reality for you…
what would your fantasy world look like?
top is yesterday’s fantasy today’s reality?
