Inner Beauty Photography Newsletter #3

by Pat on 30/03/2010

Hi everyone,

Welcome back for another issue of your Inner Beauty Boudoir Newsletter!

Things have been very busy behind the scenes this month with joining two marketing schemes, which I’ve not had the chance to mention before.

The first and the most important to you as it applies across the whole of the UK and is a brand new initiative to help you choose your photographer wisely.  The “UK Portrait Group” with its “Creative Partners” – The Pride of British Wedding & Portrait Photographers, enables you to book your photographer with confidence.

Only professionally qualified photographers may join the “Creative Partners”. This currently includes members of the Masters Photographers Association and the Society of Wedding & Portrait Photographers.  You can find me listed with the “Creative Partners” for both weddings and portraiture – finest female portraiture.

There will be a nationwide launch imminently so you will probably hear about the “UK Portrait Group” soon.

You may have seen a new logo with lions appear in the right hand column of my blog.  This is an affiliate part of this initiative.  If you don’t live near me but want to book a photographer with confidence – simply click on the link and you’ll find a selection of photographers in your area that you can trust.

The other organisation I’ve joined is “the best of Ipswich”, which is part of a nationwide scheme known as “the best of”.  The cool thing about this is that businesses can only join that people have recommended and are of the highest standards.  Also they only allow a maximum of ten businesses in any genre.  They are very strict about this which is flattering to me and gives me confidence in other businesses listed in their directories across the country.

thebestofipswichOK that’s enough waffle – What have I been up to in the studio?

Not only has it been a busy few weeks it’s been very interesting in that one photo shoot led to a series of other sessions in the studio.

If you’ve been reading this newsletter for a while, you’ll know that I’ve been searching for a pregnant lady willing to pose for me.  I’ve even offered sessions for FREE!

Well it finally happened!

I did a newborn baby photo session for a couple who got married last year and I was their wedding photographer.  They loved their baby photos and stuck one on Facebook.  One of their friends’ who was 30 weeks pregnant already saw the images and contacted me.  We set up a session.  And you can see a few images by following the article links below.

I’ve now got two more ladies provisionally booked next year.

And last Saturday we slotted in a rush baby photo session for guy I know from my last job after meeting him at the gym.  His boy is a little too old for a newborn but he was very persuasive :-)

I just need to process everyone’s images and get their orders ready in good time for Christmas – LOL.

If you missed out on booking your boudoir session for Christmas – Valentines Day is your next golden opportunity to give someone your perfect gift.  See the Roses Are Red article link for your perfect valentines gift in 2010.

And before I forget – the reason I didn’t get this newsletter out yesterday!

Checkout our first interview with a beauty company Upper Cup.  Upper Cup specialise in lingerie for the bigger boobed woman.  Read their story in the article links below.  Unfortunately I can’t promise to do something like this too often.  But I’d love to hear your feedback – is this something you’d like to see more of?  Perhaps some articles on general beauty tips as well?

Photography Tip

Here’s a really simple tip to help you take great portrait photos – even with a point and shoot camera.  Ah well actually it’s a three in one tip!

Keep your subject sharp while blowing the background into a blur.

This was taken on a glamour test shoot on location in Felixstowe. I used an 85mm lens set at f/2, as you can see the background has been completely thrown out of focus. I also used an external flashgun to light my subject and enable me to underexpose the backgroud for more intense colour - but that's another story.

If you’re able to adjust the controls on your camera set your aperture wide open.  A wide aperture is measured in f-stops.  But it works in the opposite way than you’d expect, the smaller the number the larger the aperture.  Depending on your lens this could be anywhere between f/2.8 and f/5.6.

If you use a point and shoot camera you may not be able to control this.  These cameras usually work with wide apertures BUT it won’t blur the background because the sensor that captures the image is tiny.

But there are two more tricks up your sleeve so even a point and shoot camera can take a pictures like the pros.

Zoom in on your subject.  Lengthening the focal length of your lens reduces how much of your image is sharp allowing you to blur the background.

Move in close and fill the frame with your subject.  Don’t let your subject be a small blob in the centre of the picture – let them stand out and fill your prints.

That’s it, your three in one tip.

The three things that control how much of your image is in focus are; lens aperture, focal length of the lens, and distance between you and your subject.

Well that’s it for another month.  Love your Boudoir. Have a Very Merry Christmas.  And see you in the New Year!
