Studio Lights Go Off For Repair

by Pat Bloomfield on 11/03/2010

In January I bought a third Bowens mono-block flash head to make it possible to accomplish more complexed lighting and introduce an air of resilience.

Literally as soon as I get the additional flash, one of my other heads starts flashing intermittently.  And the first time I used the new flash I discovered it was very difficult to adjust because the locking clamp was very tight.

New Glamour Studio Light Set up

Rim lighting on camera tripod.

by Pat Bloomfield on 25/02/2010

This evening I’ve set the studio up for a sensuous experience tomorrow. She wants fine art nude photos but wants to start of with some glamour in lingerie until her confidence builds.

The sensuous experience only allows enough time for one studio set, so I suggested we went for a black background.  A black background is fantastic for fine art nudes as all distractions from the body’s form are extracted.  However it’s a bit more tricky to set up the lighting for glamour as rim lighting is required to separate the subject from the background.

Getting Technical In The Studio

Macbeth reference colour chart

by Pat Bloomfield on 21/02/2010

After buying a Canon 5D Mk2 at the SWPP conference in January I had to upgrade Lightroom. Lightroom is the application I use to do initial editing and manage thousands of images. The current version of Lightroom is able to take advantage of the Adobe colour space, which has a larger colour space than Canon’s RAW file.

This means it possible to take advantage of more colour data captured in the RAW image. This adds even more refinement to using high bit image data, which gives greater tonal control and colour corrections.

I didn’t take much notice of this until testing the camera’s exposure meter accuracy before my first wedding this year, which is in a few weeks. This highlighted the fact that images were captured too dark in the middle grey tones using the standard settings. This means skin tones may be recorded darker than they should for a correctly exposed image. It may also explain the need to slightly brighten images before printing.

All this inspired me to configure the processing of my RAW image files using a technique taught by Dave Montizambert a world expert on lighting for digital. The process requires a Macbeth colour profiling chart, so I took the plunge and ordered one.

Traditional Portrait Scoops Silver Award

Silver Award for Traditional Portraiture Photography

This picture was taken in one of the model portfolios I did late last year in the studio.  Photographing men is very different from ladies as they don’t want a feminine look.  We wanted to show his great physique in a masculine manner but looking friendly rather than aggressive.  This was especially important due to being heavily tattooed.

He was very pleased with the final results, which I think achieved my goals.
